Motorcycle tyres which ones to pick?
Selecting motorcycle tyres can seem very hard and daunting, however once you consider a few factors, making a choice becomes a lot easier. The purpose of this short blog, is to help you understand what you are looking for in your next tyre set.
Firstly: What type of motorcycle do you have?
Is it a race track oriented bike? Is it designed for touring and long hauls?
Is the bike designed to be a workhorse used for commuting in all conditions?
These questions are important to be considered as they affect the speed and load rating of your motorcycle tyre.
Second: What is your primary intended use for the bike?
Are you commuting? Going for weekend rides? Track days - do you need slicks? Long-distance touring? Adventure riding? This is a crucial factor to consider as picking the wrong type of tyre for your use can be unsafe and will not make your ride enjoyable.
Third: Given the above two factors, what are your priorities in a tyre? Are you willing to compromise on mileage to get grip? Are you happy with excellent grip on hot days but minimal in the cold or wet? Are you budget conscious and just want a tyre that's not bad all round, and not specific for anything in particular?
Below are some examples that we would recommend here at Platinum Motorcycles Melbourne:
Pirelli Rosso IV - Great all rounder tyre, preferring the warmer months but will still perform in the cold and light rain. These tyres provide amazing feedback from the road and will also work for the occasional track with a set of warmers, and will happily carry you through the reefton spur in summer.

Michelin Road 6 - The perfect commuter tyre, good mileage and grip in wet and dry conditions. Great for touring however lacks in feedback from the road. Creates a comfortable ride and soaks up the bumps however struggles to relay this information to the rider due to its design.

Pirelli Angel ST - A budget commuter tyre that performs well on most bikes up to 1000cc. It has good mileage and good sporty grip in summer, lets down a little in winter wet riding but still a very capable tyre. It provides good feedback to the rider from the road.
